📢 Got my first Letter to the Editor published this week by the SF Chronicle. 📧 Letters: Here’s what Gov. Newsom’s proposed budget cuts will do to the arts. It’s not prettyRegarding“ ‘Devastating and disappointing’: Newsom’s proposed budget cuts to the arts would place California 45th nationwide” (Arts & Entertainment, SFChronicle.com, May 17): Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed budget cuts to the arts and a 38% reduction in funding to the California Arts Council is a significant setback for the state. The Latino Community Foundation recently administered the Pilot Creative Corps Program, an initiative through the council that sought to leverage the arts to increase public awareness about climate mitigation, relief and recovery. With state resources, the foundation funded 28 nonprofit organizations to catalyze civic engagement and invest in the creative economy. At least 60% of the funds went directly to salaries for artists, crucial for sustaining them, their families and our communities. Funding cuts to these programs undermine the essential role of artists in our communities and damage California’s economy. We call on Gov. Newsom to reconsider these devastating cuts. Folks: while I'm drowning in communications about some of my most recent posts (sorry! I'll come back to those topics and requests and connections soon, I promise!), maybe I can change the topic for long enough to encourage folks in Western PA/OH/WV area to seriously consider donating to PublicSource.News matters. We all know this because the bias in news over many, many years is what has led to our poorly-educated, poorly-oriented, conspiracy-loving ways and to so much divisiveness. We need honest, factual, deep, relevant local news as a salve for these wounds of bias. That's PublicSource. They cover real news from our region (greater Pittsburgh area), and they no it without a loss of fuss. PublicSource has covered the actual story behind housing instability in the region. They have audited the use of public funds and shown where the money went. They provided a super in-depth set of stories about property taxes (one of my favorite subjects in Allegeny Count--really!). They cover real estate development, community activism, art, housing, compensation, politics, transportation, economic development and more. PublicSource exists because of our donations, because advertising doesn't really pay for news. If you've never read PublicSource before, please consider doing so today. If you've read, but never donated to PublicSource before, please consider doing so today as well.I give these folks money and I serve on the board of directors because I value what they're doing and I value their existence in our region. You should, too. (PS: your money will be multiplied by matches right now, including money from me, so give away some of my money, please. But also, just give something, please). Thanks!

Welcome to our inaugural "Changemaker Spotlight" series! In this series, we will recognize and celebrate employees who are making a positive impact through community outreach. Johnette Mitchell is a VP, Treasury Management Relationship Manager II for First Mid’s Decatur Region. Her role allows her to build and maintain strong relationships with new and existing business customers and find financial solutions to help them be successful now and in the future. We asked Johnette, “How does your role connect to your community outreach efforts?”She said, “One of my initiatives is a monthly “Winedown Wednesdaze with First Mid and Friends” event, which spotlights local minority businesses. The vision is to help bring awareness about local minority businesses in the community, giving us an opportunity to build trustworthy relationships with the business owners, and allowing us to be a resource to help support their business needs so they can thrive. The goal is to make Decatur a great, thriving, and safe city, not only for us but for generations to come. We have successfully held ten Winedown events so far and will close out 2023 with a total of twelve.”We also asked Johnette, “What impact have your community outreach efforts had on the local community or organizations you've been supporting?”She said, “We are changing the perception of how an entire community of underserved people perceive financial institutions. What was once a perception of fear, intimidation, or lack of trust in banks is slowly developing into positive relationships where people feel empowered and supported, and where trust and respect are being earned. The voices of the people we serve are spreading the word across the community that First Mid is making a difference here. We are creating a brand that says, “We as a financial institution are here to serve ALL people.”#ChangemakerSpotlight

As a summer camp director, one of the mottos I'd try to instill in my staff was "See the need, meet the need" and at that time "the need" was a water cooler needing to be refilled or an extra set of hands in the kitchen. Reflecting on the work we've done at SWIM over the last year, I've realized that we're helping organizations addressing food insecurity use the "see the need, meet the need" philosophy in many ways➡Using their data to better understand what their neighbors want and need, so they can "see" the need better. ➡Planning goals and strategies about what they learned from their data so they can meet the need.➡Leveraging their influence to set the table for innovation and collaboration to assist others in meeting the need.Read more about the work we're doing here: https://lnkd.in/griXz4YK

When people ask me why I chose to get into politics, the first question they ask is (usually), "Why?" The implication, stated or unstated, is that politics is dirty and messy, and smart people should stay away (unless there's something wrong with them). When I answer, "Because it matters. Because I think I can make a difference. Because if good people stay out of it, then we cannot complain when bad people dominate it." Then (usually) there is a pause and they ask, "how can I help?"At a local level, politics is about talking with individuals. I have committed to knocking on 12,415 doors by November. To do that I need 500 volunteer shifts. If you're in Louisville and can join us on Sunday afternoon, come to this family-friendly event, 4-7pm. If you can't or aren't local but still want to help, sign up as a volunteer at www.benforlou.com and we'll contact you with the next opportunities. If you can't give time, we'll take money.

Today's parents and carers face a unique challenge. The first generation of children growing up digitally native and how best to keep them safe online, and to protect themselves from potential harm while learning about and enjoying all that the digitally connected world has to offer.Too often in the workplace we only train our staff on what we believe will bring the organisation direct value. It's all about the ROI.What ROI do you think you'll get from having staff who know how to keep the most vulnerable people in their lives safer, and know that their own organisation took the time to equip them to do it?Breck Foundation ##onlinesafety ##childsafeguarding #techforgood
