Wages Funeral Service, LLC FAM- ILY 120 Scenic Highway, Lawrenceville, GA 30046, 770-963-2411. William Larsen DURHAM RURAL RETREAT, VA Kenneth Davis Cottrell, Sr.
of Rural Retreat, Virginia, went to be with Jesus, on No- vember 4, 2016. He was the 94 year old son of Stanley and Goldie Cottrell. He was pre- ceded in death by his three sib- lings, his wife of seventeen years, Doris Hills Cot- trell, and his wife of forty-two years Shirley Sexton Cottrell. After graduation from high school he joined Westinghouse Electric Corporation in New- ark, New Jersey. Soon after joining Westinghouse he took leave and joined the US Army Air Corp.
After pilot training he was stationed at Worming- ford Field, north of London, England, where he served as a P51 pilot with the 338th squadron of the 55th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force. During a bomber escort into Germany his plane went down behind German lines. Lt. Cottrell was able to connect with the Dutch resis- tance. After evading capture for seventy-seven days, he was repatriated with Allied forces.
After the war he returned to Westinghouse, was transferred to Raleigh, North Carolina and served in various management roles until his retirement in 1982. In 1994, having tired of the big city that Raleigh had be- come, he packed up and moved to Rural Retreat, Virginia. Ken truly loved the peace and tran- quility of these beautiful moun- tains. He and his beloved wife Shirley traveled extensively all over North America. Whether on the inter-coastal waterway, around Puerto Rico (where he established a new Westing- house manufacturing facility), the Virgin Islands and beyond in their boat or in their RV they spent much of their forty-two years together searching for whatever might be around the next bend or over the next hill.
He truly loved the wilderness of Alaska, hav- ing and explored there many times. They camped in all forty eight lower states, Alaska and all of the provinces of Canada. If anyone was born two hun- dred years too late, it was he. At ninety four he continued to live alone, and care for himself. A in- dependent soul, he lived on his own terms and never gave up his determination to face trials head-on.
Always fair in his decisions, once he made up his mind, whatever the deci- sion might be, he stuck to it, refusing to be deterred from what he believed was fair and right. Ken Sr. is survived by two sons and one daughter; Ken- neth D. Jr. and Sousin Cottrell of Rural Retreat, Virginia, Ray- mond M.
and Vianna Cottrell of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Laurie C. and Robert Dwu- let of Raleigh, North Carolina; nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and two grandchildren.
